Requirements
Minimum requirements for a smooth picture
Internet speed
About 10 Mbps per HD stream, 25 Mbps or more for 4K or several screens.
Stable connection
A cable or 5 GHz Wi-Fi to the main TV. Stability beats raw speed.
Up-to-date software
Install system updates; older software may not run current player apps.
Free storage
Streaming sticks need a little free space for the app and its guide data.
Phones & tablets
Watching on a phone or tablet
iPhones, iPads and Android phones and tablets all work with a player app from their own store. They are handy for the kitchen, the bedroom or the second game on a busy Sunday.
On mobile data, keep an eye on your allowance: an hour of HD video can use around 1.5 to 3 GB. On Wi-Fi it makes no difference.
Many phone apps can also cast to a TV. If you plan to watch on the big screen most of the time, though, a dedicated TV app or stick gives a better and more reliable picture.
Computers
Watching on Windows, Mac or Chromebook
Windows and Mac computers use a desktop player app; we recommend one when you order. A Chromebook can usually run the Android version of a player app from Google Play.
Laptops are also a good way to test the service before setting up the TV, because typing the sign-in details on a keyboard is quick.
Good to know
Devices to check with us first
- Smart TVs older than about six or seven years. Their app stores may no longer offer suitable apps.
- Roku devices and Roku TVs. Their store rarely carries IPTV player apps; a streaming stick on a spare HDMI port solves it.
- Game consoles. Options are limited and change often. A stick is usually simpler.
- Unbranded TV boxes with very old Android versions. They may not run current apps safely.
How to find your model number
- Smart TV: Settings → Support or About; or the sticker on the back.
- Fire TV: Settings → My Fire TV → About.
- Android TV / Google TV: Settings → System → About.
- Apple TV: Settings → General → About.
A photo of that screen is all we need to check.
